Nature Conservancy

“Knowledge generates interest, and interest generates compassion.”

Douglas W. Tallamy, Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens

There's a passion for the earth, for the dirt under our feet and the rustle of the leaves that feels intrinsic to who we are. Our need to protect what the earth has given us is one of the great connectors of people across the globe.  Small changes, at the homeowner and individual level, can make a big difference in helping to restore our ecosystem, and we hope to make an impact right in people’s yards.

Of particular interest are projects focused on landscape conservation that improves water quality, promotes and preserves native species, and provides wildlife habitat, such as:

  • Native prairie restoration

    • By planting and restoring prairie, we are helping to prevent erosion, improve water quality, support diverse species, reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and help stabilize land through extreme weather changes.

  • Control of invasive species

    • Invasive species like buckthorn, Canada thistle, Japanese Barberry, and Reed Canary grass outcompete native plants and disrupt our ecosystem.  Often, eradication of these species can be overwhelming, both in terms of scope and financial burden.

  • Homeowner support

    • Many homeowners are curious about converting parts of their yard to native species, replacing grass with native alternatives, reducing water consumption, and finding ways to live alongside our natural ecosystem.  Education, cost, and time are barriers to establishing native pockets into a homeowner's landscaping.

Kvinnelig Foundation will provide grants to 501(c)(3) organizations with established conservancy efforts to help tackle challenges such as these.
